Fossil fuel era ends as carbon capture technology enables zero-emission future
Efforts to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are crucial to combat climate change. Scientists are focusing on capturing and storing excess carbon dioxide from power plants. One effective method is post-combustion capture, which can retrofit existing plants. Another promising approach is chemical looping combustion capturing, which can result in highly concentrated carbon dioxide streams without pollution. Different storage techniques like geological sequestration and mineral carbonation are being explored. Utilizing stored carbon dioxide for enhanced gas, water, and oil recovery is also part of the strategy. Despite some challenges like public perceptions and costs, these methods show potential in reducing carbon footprints and transitioning to a more sustainable energy future.
