New study reveals key to improving riverbed stability and erosion control
The study looked at how sediment moves over underwater ridges in a river. By using high-speed cameras and laser technology, the researchers found that sediment transport increases along the ridge, except at the top where it decreases. They also discovered that there are strong sideways movements of sediment near where the water flow reattaches after separating. These sideways movements are important for how sediment is carried downstream.
