Deficit irrigation boosts water productivity for apricot farmers facing scarcity
In this research, scientists investigated how to use less water in apricot farming. They tested different watering strategies for apricot trees. They found that by applying less water at specific times, the trees did not suffer, and the crop stayed healthy. This helped save water. For example, using a bit less water during fruit growth and even less after harvesting increased crop water productivity by 13.2% to 25.6%. By watering smarter, they saved 1124 to 2133 cubic meters of water per hectare. They also learned that giving the trees too much stress from lack of water reduced their growth. They figured out the best times to cut back on water, like after the fruits were grown. This study shows that with the right watering schedule, farmers can save water and still grow good apricots.
