Indigenous knowledge key to sustainable rangeland management for pastoralists.
Pastoralists have valuable knowledge about managing rangelands based on their long experience. A study looked at how pastoralists use their knowledge for rangeland management. They found that pastoralists focus on exploiting, conserving, and restoring the land. Pastoralists prioritize exploiting resources, followed by conservation and restoration efforts. Key practices include monitoring plant growth for grazing, holding meetings for conservation, and implementing grazing systems for restoration. Age, history of pastoralism, and income all influence pastoralists' knowledge-based behavior in managing rangelands. Combining indigenous and modern knowledge can improve rangeland management and benefit natural resources.
