Beef's massive water footprint: Charolais cattle in Mexico guzzle nearly 3,000 liters per kilogram.
The water footprint of beef from specific cattle in Mexico was calculated in this study. By adding up the water footprints of the cow's feed ingredients and the water it drank, the researchers found that it takes around 2,972.4 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef. They didn't factor in the gray water footprint, a location-specific measure. The results showed a difference from other references, likely due to variations in the cows' diet and breed.
