New study reveals kingfishers at highest risk of toxic pollutant exposure.
A new model was developed to study how pollutants move through a wetland food web. By analyzing nitrogen isotopes in amino acids, researchers found that kingfishers had the highest levels of pollutants, followed by frogs and crabs. Different trends were seen in how pollutants moved through the food web, depending on the type of organism. This study provides a better way to understand how contaminants spread in wetlands and among different species.
