The study looked at how much petroleum products were in the snow in the Baikal area during winter 2022. They found the highest levels in industrial cities. The pollution seems to come from nearby sources. They checked if the levels were safe for fish habitats and calculated how much petroleum was on the ground and in Lake Baikal. About 11 tons of petroleum products ended up on the lake during winter.
