Tonga's Tuna Hotspots Revealed: Boosting Economy and Resource Management!
The researchers studied the distribution of albacore, bigeye, skipjack, and yellowfin tuna in Tonga's waters from 2002 to 2018. They used models to analyze factors like sea temperature, chlorophyll levels, and depth to predict where the tuna would be caught. They found that the year of catch was most important for albacore and bigeye tuna, while bottom depth mattered most for skipjack and yellowfin tuna. Albacore tuna were caught most in the north and south during June to August, bigeye tuna in the east from January to June, skipjack tuna near the edges of the zone, and yellowfin tuna around the islands and south. Catch rates varied between years for albacore and bigeye tuna, but increased for skipjack and yellowfin tuna after 2014. This information can help manage Tonga's tuna resources better.
