The scientists developed a new way to predict flash floods in Japan by combining weather and water data. They used two different weather models to forecast rain, then plugged that data into a river model to predict flooding. During a big storm in July 2018, their method accurately predicted river levels up to 29 hours in advance. This means their approach could help forecast flash floods more accurately in Japan and around the world.
