Soil carbon storage may not mitigate climate change as expected
Carbon sequestration in soils is important for fighting climate change by storing carbon from the atmosphere in the ground. However, many people use the term incorrectly, leading to confusion. Building up soil carbon may not always result in true carbon sequestration, but rather just reduce carbon losses. Only a small percentage of recent papers on soil carbon use the term "carbon sequestration" correctly. It's crucial to use the term accurately to avoid misunderstandings and to distinguish between different ways carbon can be stored in the soil.
