Non-Kyoto Parties Gain Access to Lucrative Carbon Trading Market
The flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol aim to help countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions economically by allowing richer countries to fund emission reductions in poorer countries. Only countries in the Kyoto Protocol were initially meant to use these systems, but some non-parties also wanted to join. The rules of the Kyoto Protocol and further agreements made it clear that only countries in the Protocol and their chosen partners could take part in these mechanisms.
