Amazon Rainforest Losing Vital Vegetation at Alarming Rates, Threatening Ecosystem Collapse
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has been monitored for years, but a large part of the non-forest areas like savannas and grasslands were not being tracked. A new monitoring system called PRODES NF found that these non-forest areas lost about 10.46% of their land, mostly in the last 20 years. States like Mato Grosso, Roraima, and Amapá were hit the hardest, with savannas suffering the most. The data shows a strong link between non-forest loss and deforestation in the Amazon, totaling around 798,000 km² lost in the entire biome.
