Biochar Boosts Soil Microbes, Slashes Greenhouse Gases for Sustainable Agriculture
Biochar, a type of soil enhancer, can improve soil health and crop growth while reducing greenhouse gases. After analyzing data from 61 studies worldwide, researchers found that adding biochar increased microbial abundance, improved carbon and nitrogen cycles, and enhanced nitrification. Biochar made at lower temperatures is better for soil nutrients but leads to more carbon emissions. Biochar from certain sources can help reduce nitrous oxide emissions. Repeated biochar use may be necessary for sustained benefits. This research helps understand how biochar affects soil microbes and suggests tailored biochar use can benefit agriculture and the environment.
