Outdated methods overestimate wood volume in Amazon, fueling illegal timber extraction.
Wood volume is often overestimated in the Brazilian Amazon due to inaccurate estimation methods. A study compared actual harvested wood volume with estimated volume from forest inventories in five public forest areas. The research found that the forest inventories consistently overestimated the merchantable wood volume, regardless of the tree species or forest region. Only 22% of the evaluated groups showed equivalent volumes between inventory and harvest. Current methods used by forest companies are not accurate enough for sustainable forest management in the Amazon and may contribute to illegal timber extraction.
