Climate, not distance, drives diversity of cave creatures in Italy
The researchers studied copepod crustaceans in 12 caves in Italy to understand what factors affect their diversity. They found that differences in climate between regions had a bigger impact on the types of copepods found in each cave than how far apart the caves were. The temperature in different seasons was especially important in shaping the copepod communities. This shows that regional climate plays a significant role in determining the variety of copepods in underground environments.
