Arid region faces dire water crisis, food security threatened
In a study of an area in Iran called the Jazmourian watershed, researchers looked at how water availability affects farming. They used fancy ways to measure water stress and found that there's a big water problem in the area. The farmers there use a lot of water for different crops, which has made things worse. They found that the water stress index is high, meaning there's not enough water for all they need to grow. The main type of water used for farming is blue water, which comes from sources like rivers. The area has too little water but grows too many things, which leads to more stress and poverty. The researchers show that with the water getting scarcer and more crops being grown, the area is facing a harder time getting enough water. Different parts of the area also show various issues with water stress and poverty.
