Sociotechnical transitions are important for how new innovations affect society. The relationship between sociotechnical transitions and disruptive innovations is explored in this article. Disruptive innovations can lead to major changes in how products or services are used. Not all disruptive innovations cause sociotechnical transitions, but every big change in society has been driven by disruptive innovations. These transitions are not always permanent and can be reversed. Changing an entire category of products or services is key to making a big societal shift.
