Drip irrigation boosts tobacco yields, quality, and profits for farmers
In a study on tobacco farming, researchers tested drip irrigation compared to traditional watering methods. They found that daily drip irrigation at 100% of the water needed produced similar good leaf yields as alternate day drip irrigation at the same level. Both methods were better than the usual way of watering. The daily drip method increased the yield by 14% and improved quality scores. Water use efficiency was also higher with drip irrigation. Nicotine content went up slightly, while reducing sugars decreased but the economic returns were comparable. They concluded that watering every other day with drip irrigation at the right level could work well for growing quality chewing tobacco.
