Optimal sowing dates boost maize and pigeonpea yields in rainfed conditions.
A study in Karnataka looked at how different planting times and crop combinations affect maize and pigeonpea growth and yield. They found that planting maize and pigeonpea in early June gave the best yields. Growing maize and pigeonpea separately resulted in higher yields than growing them together. When grown together, having more maize rows than pigeonpea rows led to the highest yields. The best combination was planting maize and pigeonpea in a 4:2 row ratio in early June, which gave the highest yields and profits compared to other planting methods.
