Bitcoin's water usage explodes, threatening global water security, as miners urged to adopt cooling tech and renewable power.
Bitcoin's water use has increased rapidly, more than doubling from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, it reached 1,573.7 billion liters, with each transaction using 16,279 liters of water. By 2023, it could reach 2,237 billion liters per year. To reduce this impact, miners can use cooling techniques and power sources that don't use freshwater. Changing Bitcoin software could also cut its water footprint significantly.
