Olive leaves biorefinery transforms waste into profitable eco-friendly products.
A study looked at turning olive leaves into useful products like antioxidants, bioethanol, and lignin. They used a special process called organosolv extraction and fermentation. The results showed that 100 grams of olive leaves can make 16.58 grams of antioxidants, 11.12 grams of lignin, and 2.85 grams of bioethanol. The process was profitable, with a net value of $47.9 million and a return rate of 27.8%. The biorefinery could be set up in Jaén, Spain, where lots of olive leaves are available. The waste from the process is not very environmentally friendly, but overall, turning olive leaves into valuable products is a good idea.
