Malawi struggles with maintaining sanitation progress; 17% return to open defaecation despite proclaimed open defaecation-free status.
The study looked at sanitation and hygiene practices in Malawi to see if Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 can be achieved by 2030. They found that even in areas declared open defecation-free, some households went back to open defecation. Only a small percentage had proper handwashing facilities with soap and water, even though most had soap available. This shows that more work is needed to maintain progress and improve construction quality to reach the goal of adequate sanitation and hygiene for all.
