A survey was done in Merced County, California to look for San Joaquin kit foxes in an area planned for Phase II of Kesterson Reservoir. The researchers searched the land and did night surveys but found no signs or sightings of kit foxes. They concluded that the reservoir project and its activities will not harm the endangered kit fox population.
