Water deficit and nitrogen fertilization stunt winter wheat growth and nitrogen uptake.
Winter wheat plants were grown in tubes to see how lack of water and nitrogen affected their growth. Not having enough water at different stages of growth made the plants shorter, with less leaves, and less nitrogen uptake. The stage when the plants were starting to grow taller was the most affected by lack of water, followed by when they were flowering, filling grains, and just starting to grow. Giving the plants water again after they were stressed helped them grow better. Having less nitrogen in the soil also made the plants grow less and take up less nitrogen. Adding more nitrogen to the soil helped the plants grow better, even when they didn't have enough water.
