Central banks can intervene in foreign exchange markets to prevent currency appreciation without negative consequences. Despite the belief that large-scale intervention weakens domestic economies, major emerging market central banks' massive interventions from 2000 to 2004 did not lead to higher inflation or financial system distortions. Instead, inflation remained low, financial systems strengthened, and sustained growth was observed.
