Acid rain threatens Pennsylvania waters, endangering fish populations.
The project aimed to see if acid rain was harming Pennsylvania waters. Researchers looked at existing data on water chemistry and fish populations. They found that in 34% of cases, pH or alkalinity levels decreased, with some dropping to levels bad for fish. The biggest changes were in streams on certain types of rocks, but other areas were affected too. When pH or alkalinity dropped, the number of fish species also decreased in 58% of cases. This shows that acid rain may be harming Pennsylvania's waters and fish populations.
