New framework simplifies assessing environmental impact of products.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method to evaluate the environmental impact of products throughout their entire life cycle. To simplify LCA, researchers have developed indicator approaches which use average data for common stages of a product's life cycle. These approaches include environmental indicators, impact drivers, and estimators. Impact drivers are product attributes that strongly affect environmental performance. By using these indicators, a framework called Product Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS) can be created to help design environmentally friendly products and manage supply chains, as shown in a green design system for railway vehicles.
