Irrigation Program Boosts Rice Productivity But Widens Income Inequality in Bangladesh
The study looked at how an Irrigation Management Programme (IMP) affected rice productivity and income inequality in North-West Bangladesh. They used two models to analyze rice productivity and income inequality. The IMP increased rice productivity and resource efficiency but did not reduce income inequality significantly. The IMP schemes had larger command areas and better management than non-IMPs. Inequality within privileged groups decreased, but increased within underprivileged groups. The demand for labor is expected to increase, leading to higher wage rates.
