Sustainability and development: Reconciling the paradox through measurable indicators for sustainable progress.
This article discusses the relationship between sustainability and sustainable development. Critics sometimes argue that combining sustainability with development is problematic. The authors aim to clarify this by defining sustainability as a characteristic of a process or state and sustainable development as a process working towards a sustainable end goal. By setting criteria for both sustainability and sustainable development, measurable indicators can be established to assess if a development process is sustainable and if the resulting state is also sustainable.
