Drought-stricken farmers in Portugal find hope in deficit irrigation strategies.
By using a computer model called ISAREG, scientists investigated how to use less water for farming in a region of Portugal with limited water. They looked at different ways to water wheat, maize, and sunflower crops under dry conditions. The study found that using less water for wheat can still give good results, but maize needs more water to grow well. Sunflower was okay with less water because farmers get compensation for lower yields. This information can help farmers in similar dry areas decide how to use water wisely to make sure their crops grow while using as little water as possible.
