New cropping systems in Punjab boost yields, profits, and water savings!
A study in Punjab compared different crop sequences to see which ones gave the highest yields and profits while using water efficiently. The best sequences were maize-potato-onion, summer groundnut-potato-pearlmillet, and maize-wheat-mungbean. These systems produced more rice equivalent yield and saved a lot of irrigation water compared to the traditional rice-wheat system. The maize-potato-onion sequence had the highest profits, while also keeping weed populations low. Overall, these findings show that certain crop combinations can increase productivity, save water, and make more money for farmers in Punjab.
