New method accurately predicts flood volume in small humid regions.
The study aimed to predict flood volumes in small humid region watersheds by modifying the Soil Conservation Service approach. Researchers examined two ways to predict runoff volume: using soil-cover information and a rainfall-runoff model, or correlating runoff volumes with climate and watershed parameters. They developed prediction equations using data from 210 events in 15 watersheds and found that the first approach, which involves calibrating watershed wetness, was more effective than the second approach. The study also presented the frequency distribution of watershed wetness associated with flood events.
