Urban centers outside downtowns key to future of mass transit
Large urban areas in the U.S. have been spreading out over the past 25 years, with people and jobs moving away from downtown areas. While public transportation mainly focuses on downtown, it would be beneficial to have multiple major centers in the city. This article talks about the idea of having many important hubs in a city, not just one. It discusses the advantages and challenges of creating these diverse centers outside of downtown. Progress has been made in cities like Denver and Minneapolis/St. Paul. However, there are still many technical, political, and financial obstacles to overcome in order to establish a nationwide system of multi-nodal cities in the U.S. by the year 2000.
