Independent Boards Reduce Audit Costs, Boosting Transparency for Investors
This study looked at Swedish companies listed on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm to see how certain board traits and having an audit committee impact the fees paid for auditing services. They studied 187 company-year observations in 2011. The results showed that boards with more independence tend to pay lower audit fees. However, having more expertise in the board and an active audit committee led to higher audit costs. Specifically, companies with more audit committee meetings paid more for audits. Yet, completely independent audit committees and larger audit committees in relation to nomination committees paid less for audits. These findings support the need for audit committees in Swedish listed companies to improve how boards and audit committees work.
