Intercropping maize with frenchbean boosts yields and soil nitrogen levels.
A study in a maize and legume intercropping system found that planting French beans with maize in a 1:2 row ratio resulted in the highest grain yield, maize equivalent, and land equivalent ratio. French beans were more compatible with maize than green gram. This intercropping system also increased the availability of residual nitrogen in the soil, leading to a higher benefit-to-cost ratio.
