Spring applied parking brakes have not been widely used in freight trains in Australia. A new brake system called BFCB-F has been developed specifically for freight trains, removing the need for manual brake rigging and improving safety and efficiency. The lack of adoption in the past was due to technical, operational, and cultural reasons, but as the focus on operational efficiency grows, there is now a greater demand for automatic park brakes in freight trains. By changing the way freight operations are conducted, operators can benefit from the adoption of proven technologies in new ways.
