In West Virginia, Appalachian hardwood stands were managed using different methods for 34 years. A commercial clearcut resulted in a diverse stand with yellow-poplar and black locust dominating. Selection and diameter-limit treatments promoted sugar maple growth. Overall, stand quality improved through management, with the clearcut stand showing the most potential for future tree species variety.
