Indian tuna fishery sees exponential growth, oceanic waters hold key to future.
The Indian tuna fishery has been growing over the years, with landings increasing from 848 tons in 1951 to 129,801 tons in 2008. Coastal tunas like little tuna and bonito make up 57% of the catch, while oceanic species like yellowfin tuna and skipjack tuna make up 43%. Longliners catch around 87,000 tons of tuna annually in Indian waters. There is limited potential for increasing tuna production in coastal areas, but significant potential in oceanic waters. However, since tunas are shared resources, fishing in one area can affect fisheries in other areas.
