Integrating transportation and land use planning can save money, reduce construction times, and improve quality of life. Six states have successfully integrated their plans, showing that an institutional framework and local capacity are key. States need tools to evaluate growth strategies and better collaboration between planning organizations and transportation departments. Tennessee and Utah have made the most progress in achieving these goals.
