The article developed new crash prediction models using individual vehicle data to improve freeway traffic safety. By analyzing safe headway distance, researchers accurately predicted traffic crash likelihood on Virginia interstates. The hurdle negative binomial model was found to be the most effective in predicting crash occurrence compared to other models.
