Electric Cars Poised to Overtake Gasoline Vehicles with Breakthrough Battery Advancements
Electric cars need better batteries to improve acceleration without adding too much weight. Researchers are exploring over 30 types of batteries with higher energy density than lead-acid ones. Lead-acid batteries currently only store a quarter of their potential capacity. The Flinders electric car uses a special motor that allows for a lighter acid, extending the battery's lifespan. While sodium-sulphur batteries have the needed energy density, their high operating temperature limits their use to commercial vehicles. Lithium-organic electrolyte batteries show promise and can work at normal temperatures. Electric cars may not replace all cars but could be great for city driving as a second vehicle. Commercial fleets are likely to be the first to adopt electric vehicles due to lower costs.
