The European Union was meant to bring countries closer together and make decisions that benefit citizens. However, many believe that the EU was mostly created by elites and not the people. This lack of direct influence by citizens is called a "democratic deficit". Even though the EU has tried to give more power to the European Parliament, this issue still exists.
