Crumbling Bridges Strengthened with Innovative Composite Material, Boosting Safety and Longevity
The researchers developed a new method to strengthen concrete beams using a special type of glass fiber composite. This method involves wrapping the beams with a specific shape of glass fiber mat and using a vacuum to compact the material. Unlike traditional carbon fiber plates, this composite is tougher and more damage-resistant. The experimental results showed that beams reinforced with the glass fiber composite had a significantly higher load capacity and were more flexible than those reinforced with carbon fiber plates. This new technique could be a cleaner and more effective way to upgrade bridge structures and buildings.
