New statewide strategy to ease traffic on rural highways in Victoria
A strategy was developed in Victoria to add overtaking lanes on rural highways to improve traffic flow before full road duplication. By using a rural traffic simulation model, the road construction authority identified the benefits of spaced-out overtaking lanes. Highways were ranked based on traffic issues, and trial lanes were added to improve traffic flow. A statewide plan was created for implementing overtaking lanes on rural highways in Victoria, with detailed reports guiding the location of these lanes. This approach will make overtaking lanes a common solution for traffic relief on rural state highways in Victoria.
