Nepalese Farmers Embrace Mungbean as Chickpea Declines, Boosting Food Security
In Nepal, farmers are looking for new legume crops to grow because of issues with chickpeas and grasspeas. Mungbean was tested and promoted in fallow lands after farmers liked the varieties from AVRDC. Even though mungbeans had low yields when grown without extra fertilizer or water, farmers preferred AVRDC varieties for their quality. This shows that improved mungbean varieties can be a good catch crop in different farming systems.
