Revitalizing Chicago's South Suburbs: New Sustainable Development Opportunities Unveiled
Older industrial cities and suburbs like Chicago's south suburbs are finding new ways to grow sustainably by focusing on their legacy rail assets. By combining residential and commercial development around public transit (TOD) with manufacturing and logistics businesses near freight transportation assets (COD), these areas can revitalize their economies and clean up the environment. A computer program called the TOD and COD Optimizer helped identify the best sites for this type of development. A pilot project in Harvey and Blue Island showed that linking TOD and COD can be an effective strategy for economic revitalization. This approach, known as the Chicago Southland Green TIME Zone, aims to reduce transportation costs, decrease pollution, boost local economies, and create jobs.
