Reflective deck cracks in bridges pose major safety risk for drivers.
Side-by-side box-beam bridges in Michigan are experiencing reflective deck cracking at beam joints, causing premature deterioration. To understand this issue, a decommissioned bridge's shear key condition was monitored, and a new bridge's construction stages were observed. Longitudinal deck cracking was found shortly after construction but before traffic opened, clarifying previous conflicting conclusions in the literature.
