New simulation model revolutionizes rural highway overtaking improvements.
A simulation model was created in Japan to decide if extra lanes are needed on two-lane rural roads. The model uses road and traffic data to plan and design these added lanes for better traffic flow. Two types of lanes are considered: slower traffic lanes and overtaking lanes. The model accurately reproduces traffic behavior on rural roads and provides guidelines for adding lanes.
