Urbanization in Virginia leads to increased rainfall losses, study finds.
The study looked at how urban development affects rainfall runoff in Virginia. Researchers collected data on rain and streamflow in rural and urban areas, then used a computer program to estimate different parameters. They found that as the amount of paved surfaces increased in a watershed, the rate of water loss and the shape of the runoff changed. This means that urban areas can have more runoff during storms compared to rural areas.
