The article discusses using transverse prestressing to strengthen bridge decks. Engineers reviewed past research and came up with new design ideas for prestressed decks. They created four design schemes using precast deck slabs, two for fixing existing bridges and two for building new ones. Detailed plans, cost estimates, and design calculations were made for each scheme. A cost-benefit analysis showed that the new designs were better than traditional concrete decks.
